Choose Air Dry or turn off Heated Dry if your model permits it. Compare a similar load at your regular unloading time to see whether the setting suits your routine.
Find the control
Check your model's manual for Air Dry, Heated Dry, or drying options tied to specific cycles. Some controls can change when you pick a new cycle. Check the selected option before starting, and follow the manual's instructions for opening the door.
Compare two loads
Use similar loads with plates, cups, and dishwasher-safe plastic containers. Keep the wash cycle and the interval before unloading the same. In the first load use your usual setting. In the second, change the drying option. Record what still needs a towel. Separate pooled water in cup bases from droplets on dishes. A puddle can spill onto otherwise dry items during unloading.
Adjust one detail
Tilt a container if the rack can support it and the container clears the spray arm. Try the next air-dry load with that change. A breakfast load can be a useful test if it can wait longer than your dinner dishes.
Review the result
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends air drying to save drying-cycle energy. This exercise compares moisture and convenience in your kitchen. Which piece would you reposition first?
Score the result in a minute
Give each kind of item a simple score. Dry can mean ready to put away, damp can mean a few drops, and pooled can mean water that needs to be poured off. Compare plates with plates and containers with containers. If only the plastic lids need attention, you can decide whether drying those by hand is an acceptable trade for that load.
Note what changed
Write down the cycle, selected drying option, approximate contents, and time before unloading. A fuller second load or a longer wait could explain a difference. If the results are close, repeat the comparison on another day. You can use the same two mugs and containers in both tests to make it easier to tell which shapes tend to collect water.
Fit the setting to the schedule
A load you start after breakfast might be ready to unload after work. Dinner plates you need again for dessert have a shorter window. Try choosing the drying option based on when the dishes are needed. If the control resets when you change cycles, make checking the panel part of starting the machine. Compare convenience based on what you actually reach for first.
