How to Stop Condensation on Windows

Slug: stop-condensation-on-windowsPillar: Practical Living > Home ImprovementKeyword: how to stop condensation on windowsExcerpt: Condensation on windows causes mould and damage. Here are simple, proven fixes you can do today to stop it for good.

Why Does Condensation Form on Windows?

Condensation appears when warm, moist air inside your home meets the cold surface of a window. It is most common in kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms, especially in winter. Left untreated, it creates perfect conditions for mould growth and can damage frames, sills, and walls.

1. Improve Ventilation Throughout Your Home

The single most effective fix is letting fresh air in. Open windows for 10 to 15 minutes each morning to flush out overnight moisture. In kitchens and bathrooms, always run extractor fans during and for 20 minutes after cooking or showering. A portable dehumidifier rated at 10 to 12 litres per day helps significantly for a typical 3-bedroom house.

2. Use a Dehumidifier Strategically

Place a dehumidifier in rooms where condensation is worst. Set it to maintain 50 to 55 percent relative humidity. A mid-range model like the Meaco 12L costs around 170 pounds and pays for itself in reduced mould remediation costs. Empty the tank daily when running in winter.

3. Upgrade to Secondary or Double Glazing

Single-glazed windows are a major culprit because the glass gets very cold. Secondary glazing is a budget-friendly option costing from 100 to 200 pounds per window DIY. In England, landlords are legally required to ensure homes are free from category 1 hazards, which includes damp and mould.

4. Keep Indoor Temperatures Consistent

A steady temperature of 18 to 21 degrees Celsius throughout your home reduces the thermal shock that turns water vapour into droplets. Use a programmable thermostat to maintain a minimum of 16 degrees Celsius overnight in bedrooms.

5. Reduce Moisture at the Source

Drying clothes on indoor radiators releases up to 2 litres of water vapour. Use a tumble dryer or dry clothes outside where possible. When cooking, keep lids on pans and run the extractor fan. In the bedroom, keep a window slightly ajar overnight.

6. Apply Anti-Condensation Window Film

Anti-condensation window film adds a thin insulating layer to single-glazed windows, reducing the temperature difference between the glass and the room. It costs around 15 to 30 pounds per window and is straightforward to apply.

When to Call a Professional

If you see condensation between the panes of double-glazed units, the seal has failed and the unit needs replacing. If you notice black mould on walls, you may have penetrating or rising damp requiring a specialist assessment. For more on maintaining a healthy home, see our

guides.Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there condensation on the inside of my windows every morning?

This is caused by overnight humidity from breathing, cooking, and bathing meeting cold window glass. Improving ventilation and maintaining consistent indoor temperatures are the most effective fixes.

Does leaving the heating on low overnight help?

Yes. Keeping a steady minimum temperature of around 16 degrees Celsius prevents the glass from getting very cold overnight, reducing condensation. It also uses less energy than blasting heat in the morning.

Is condensation on windows dangerous?

The condensation itself is not dangerous, but persistent moisture leads to mould growth, which can cause respiratory problems. The NHS recommends keeping indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent to prevent mould.

What is the fastest way to stop condensation right now?

Open a window for 10 minutes to exchange moist air, wipe down the glass and sill with a dry cloth, and run an extractor fan. Then address the root cause, usually insufficient ventilation or high indoor humidity.

Does window insulation film actually work?

It helps on single-glazed windows by raising the surface temperature of the glass. It will not eliminate condensation entirely if your home humidity is very high, but makes a noticeable difference for the price.
