How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Shower Glass

Slug: how-to-remove-hard-water-stains-shower-glassPillar: Practical Living > CleaningKeyword: remove hard water stains shower glassTagline: Simple tricks that dissolve limescale for goodExcerpt: Hard water stains on shower glass look cloudy and stubborn — but the right household products remove them fast. Here's what actually works.

Why Shower Glass Gets Hard Water Stains

Hard water contains dissolved minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium. Every time water hits your shower glass and evaporates, it leaves those minerals behind as a white, hazy film. Over time, the build-up hardens and becomes increasingly difficult to wipe off with a cloth alone.

The good news: you don't need expensive commercial products. Most effective solutions use acidic ingredients that dissolve mineral deposits on contact.

What You'll Need

You likely already have these at home: white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), a spray bottle, a non-scratch sponge or microfibre cloth, and optionally a squeegee and lemon juice.

Method 1: White Vinegar Spray (Best for Light Build-Up)

Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray the entire glass surface generously and let it sit for 10–15 minutes — longer for heavier deposits. Wipe in circular motions with a non-scratch sponge, then rinse with clean water and squeegee dry. Repeat weekly as a preventative measure.

Vinegar is mildly acidic (pH around 2.5) and works by dissolving calcium carbonate, the main mineral in limescale. For very light stains, this alone will restore full clarity.

Method 2: Vinegar and Bicarbonate Paste (Best for Stubborn Stains)

For thicker deposits, make a paste by mixing 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with enough white vinegar to form a thick consistency. Apply the paste directly to the stained areas and let it fizz — this is the acid-base reaction breaking down mineral bonds. Leave for 20 minutes, scrub gently with a sponge, then rinse thoroughly. You may need a second application for particularly stubborn patches.

Method 3: Lemon Juice (For Lighter Stains and a Fresh Scent)

Cut a lemon in half and rub it directly over the stained glass, squeezing as you go. Leave the juice on for 5–10 minutes, then wipe clean. Lemon juice contains citric acid, which works similarly to vinegar. This method is particularly good for regular maintenance after you've done a deeper clean.

Method 4: Commercial Limescale Remover (For Severe Cases)

If the glass hasn't been cleaned in months or years, a dedicated limescale remover such as HG Super Powerful Cleaner, Viakal, or Bar Keepers Friend may be needed. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure good ventilation. Never mix commercial cleaners with bleach.

Important: Always test a small inconspicuous area first, especially on treated or etched glass.

How to Prevent Hard Water Stains from Coming Back

The easiest prevention method is the squeegee habit — after every shower, run a squeegee down the glass to remove water droplets before they evaporate and leave minerals behind. It takes 30 seconds and dramatically reduces build-up. Spray with diluted vinegar once a week, and consider applying a rain-repellent product like Rain-X to the glass surface every few months to help water bead off.

For a long-term solution in very hard water areas, a water softener fitted to the main water supply will reduce mineral content throughout the home. The upfront cost is offset by reduced cleaning time and longer appliance lifespans.

What Not to Do

Avoid abrasive scourers or steel wool — these will scratch glass permanently. Don't use bleach on mineral deposits: bleach is alkaline, not acidic, so it won't dissolve limescale and can discolour grout. Avoid leaving acidic cleaners on for too long (over 30 minutes) as they can begin to damage certain sealants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hard water stains be permanent?

In most cases, no. Even heavily built-up deposits can be dissolved with repeated applications of acidic cleaners. However, if the glass has been etched (physically scratched by abrasive cleaning or severe mineral damage), no cleaner will restore perfect clarity.

How long should I leave vinegar on shower glass?

For light stains, 10–15 minutes is sufficient. For heavy build-up, leave for up to 30 minutes but no longer, as prolonged exposure can affect certain sealants.

Is white vinegar safe for all shower glass?

White vinegar is safe for standard tempered glass. Avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like marble nearby, as acid can etch stone. Check your shower manufacturer's guidelines if you're unsure.

Why does my shower glass go cloudy again so quickly?

This is almost always because water isn't being removed after showering. Use a squeegee daily and apply a water-repellent coating to extend the time between deep cleans.

What's the best commercial product for hard water stains?

Bar Keepers Friend (powder form), Viakal spray, and HG Super Powerful Cleaner are consistently rated highly for shower glass. Always rinse thoroughly after use.
