How to Visit Morocco on a Budget: A First-Timer's Guide

Slug: 614-morocco-budget-travel-guide-first-timersPillar: Travel > DestinationsKeyword: Morocco travel guide budget first timersExcerpt: Morocco is one of the most affordable and dramatic travel destinations in 2026. Here's how to plan a budget trip to Morocco without missing the best bits.

Why Morocco is one of the best-value trips you can take in 2026

Morocco ticks a lot of boxes that are hard to find in one country: ancient medinas with thousand-year-old architecture, Sahara desert landscapes, Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, excellent food, and genuinely warm hospitality — all at prices that feel like a different era compared to Western Europe. Morocco is trending as a summer 2026 destination, with affordable airfares from the US and UK flagged by major travel aggregators.

Budget travellers can live very comfortably for £30–50 per day including accommodation, meals, and transport. Mid-range travellers spending £70–100 per day will have access to beautiful riads, guided day trips, and restaurant dinners.

When to go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit. Temperatures are mild — around 20–26°C in most cities — and the light is beautiful. Summer is hot in inland cities like Marrakech and Fes (regularly exceeding 38°C), but cheaper and less crowded. Winter is cool in the north but mild on the southern coast.

The cities worth knowing

Marrakech is Morocco's most visited city and likely entry point. The Medina and Jemaa el-Fna square are spectacular — particularly in the evening when the square fills with food stalls, storytellers, musicians, and performers. Budget 2–3 days.

Fes is the most intact medieval city in the Arab world. The Fes el-Bali medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely disorientating in the best possible way — narrow covered lanes, tanneries, centuries-old madrasas. Less touristy than Marrakech and more historically interesting. Budget 2–3 days.

Chefchaouen — the Blue City — is the most photographed town in Morocco, and the reality lives up to the photos. The mountain setting and blue-painted streets make it an excellent contrast to busier imperial cities. Budget 1–2 days.

The Sahara around Merzouga is a full-day drive from Fes or Marrakech but worth the journey. A night in a desert camp with a sunrise camel ride sounds like a cliché and turns out not to be.

Getting around

The ONCF train network connects Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, and Marrakech at genuinely cheap prices — around £10–15 from Casablanca to Marrakech. Supratours and CTM buses serve cities not on the rail network. For the Sahara, a shared grand taxi or organised day trip through your riad is the practical option. Private car hire with a driver for a day costs around £50–70.

Where to stay

Staying in a riad — a traditional Moroccan townhouse built around a central courtyard — is one of Morocco's signature experiences and surprisingly affordable. Mid-range riads in Fes and Marrakech start from around £25–40 per night for a double room, often including breakfast.

What to eat and drink

Moroccan food is excellent and extremely cheap when eaten locally. A bowl of harira soup costs around 5–10 dirham (under 50p). A full tagine at a local restaurant runs 40–80 dirham (£3–6). Mint tea is the ubiquitous social drink, served everywhere and often poured theatrically from height.

FAQ

Is Morocco safe for first-time travellers?Yes — Morocco is generally safe. Petty hassle in medinas (persistent vendors, unofficial guides) is the most common issue. Walking with purpose and saying la shukran firmly resolves most of it.

How much money do I need for a week in Morocco?Budget: £300–400 total (excluding flights). Mid-range: £500–700 total.

Do I need a visa for Morocco?UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and most EU passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

What currency is used in Morocco? The Moroccan dirham (MAD). It's a closed currency — you can't buy it before you arrive. Exchange at the airport on arrival or use an ATM.
