How to Keep Ants Out of Your House Naturally

Slug: keep-ants-out-of-house-naturallyPillar: Practical Living > Pest ControlKeyword: how to keep ants out of your house naturallyExcerpt: Ants invading your home? Discover natural, effective methods to keep ants out permanently — no harsh chemicals needed.

Why Ants Keep Coming Back

Ants are scouts. The moment one finds a food source or a way inside your home, it lays a pheromone trail that guides hundreds more. Understanding this is key: simply killing the ants you see does not solve the problem. You need to break the trail, seal entry points, and remove the reason they came in the first place.

Step 1: Remove What Attracts Them

Ants primarily enter homes looking for food and water. Start with a ruthless clean-up. Store all dry foods such as sugar, flour, and cereal in sealed glass or hard plastic containers. Wipe down kitchen surfaces after every meal — even small crumbs are a feast for ants. Empty pet food bowls when your pet has finished eating and store pet food in sealed containers. Fix dripping taps and leaky pipes; ants are often after water, not food. Take out the rubbish daily during warm months and keep bin lids tightly closed.

Step 2: Seal Entry Points

Ants can squeeze through gaps as thin as 1mm. Walk the perimeter of your home and seal cracks around windows and door frames using silicone caulk, gaps around pipes where they enter walls, holes in window screens even tiny ones, and the gap under exterior doors. A door sweep costs under ten pounds and makes a big difference.

Step 3: Use Natural Deterrents

Several natural substances disrupt ant pheromone trails and deter them effectively.

White Vinegar

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on ants and wipe counters with it daily. The acetic acid destroys pheromone trails. The smell fades within minutes to humans but lingers long enough to confuse ants.

Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a powder made from fossilised algae. Sprinkle a thin line along ant trails, around the base of walls, and near entry points. It is harmless to humans and pets but cuts through ants' exoskeletons, dehydrating them. Reapply after rain or if the area gets wet.

Peppermint or Tea Tree Oil

Add 10 to 15 drops of peppermint essential oil to a small spray bottle of water and spritz entry points and windowsills. The strong scent masks pheromone trails. Refresh every few days.

Cinnamon and Cloves

Sprinkle ground cinnamon or place whole cloves near entry points. Ants avoid these smells strongly. This works particularly well in kitchen cupboards.

Step 4: Target the Colony

If you have a persistent ant problem, you need to deal with the nest, not just the foragers. A surprisingly effective natural bait is borax powder mixed with powdered sugar in a one-to-three ratio. Leave small amounts near ant trails on a piece of card. Worker ants carry this back to the queen. It takes 24 to 72 hours but can eliminate an entire colony. Keep this away from children and pets while in use.

Step 5: Garden and Outdoor Prevention

Most ant invasions start outside. Trim tree branches and shrubs that touch your home. Move compost heaps, wood piles, and garden debris away from the house walls. Pour boiling water directly onto any ant nests you find in the garden and repeat daily for a week.

When to Call a Professional

If you have tried all the above for two weeks with no improvement, you may be dealing with carpenter ants which damage wood, or a large underground colony that requires professional treatment. A pest control visit typically costs between eighty and one hundred and fifty pounds and usually includes a warranty.

FAQ

What smell do ants hate the most?

Ants strongly dislike peppermint, cinnamon, cloves, tea tree oil, and vinegar. Peppermint oil is particularly effective because it masks their pheromone trails, causing disorientation.

Does baking soda kill ants?

Baking soda alone has limited effect. When mixed with powdered sugar in equal parts, ants consume it and it reacts with the acid in their digestive systems. It is a slower method than borax bait but is completely non-toxic to pets and children.

Why do ants suddenly appear in my house?

Ants typically appear in spring and summer when colonies grow and scouts search for new food sources. They are often triggered by warm weather, rain which floods their nests, or food left accessible indoors.

How long does it take to get rid of ants naturally?

With consistent application of natural methods, cleaning, sealing entry points, and using deterrents, most minor infestations clear up within one to two weeks. Larger colonies dealt with using borax bait may take up to three weeks.

Are natural ant remedies safe for pets?

White vinegar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and diatomaceous earth are all safe for pets. Avoid placing borax bait in areas where pets can reach it, as it can cause digestive issues in large quantities.
