How to Make a Dirty Soda at Home (3 Ingredients, Endless Combos)

Post #: 641Slug: how-to-make-dirty-soda-at-homePillar: Food and Drink > RecipesKeyword: how to make dirty soda at homeExcerpt: Dirty sodas have hit fast-food menus across the country. Here's how to make them at home — better, cheaper, and exactly the way you like them.Date: 2026-06-29

What Is a Dirty Soda, Exactly?

A dirty soda is a fizzy drink "dirtied" with a creamy add-in — usually half-and-half, coconut creamer, or heavy cream — plus a flavoured syrup and often a citrus squeeze. The result is a sweet, slightly rich, incredibly refreshing drink that feels more indulgent than it looks. The trend started in Utah, where drinks like the "Mormon Mojito" (Diet Coke, coconut syrup, lime, cream) have been a local staple for decades at chains like Swig and Sodalicious. By 2026, dirty sodas have hit mainstream fast-food menus across the US and UK — which is exactly the right time to start making them at home, cheaper and customised to what you actually like.

The Classic Recipe: Diet Coke Dirty Soda

This is the one that started it all. It sounds odd. It tastes fantastic. Fill a large glass with ice — ideally nugget ice if you have it, since it dilutes more slowly and stays crunchy longer. Pour in 330ml of Diet Coke. Add 1.5 tablespoons of coconut syrup (Monin Coconut is the most widely available brand; a 250ml bottle costs about £5–£7 and makes around 15 drinks). Squeeze in the juice from half a lime. Then slowly pour 2 tablespoons of half-and-half or heavy cream over the back of a metal spoon so it settles on top without fizzing the whole thing flat. Stir gently once. Drink immediately.

The Anti-Fizz Secret

The biggest mistake people make with dirty sodas is pouring the cream straight in and watching the whole thing foam over. The trick — which baristas at Swig have used for years — is pouring the cream slowly over the back of a spoon. The spoon breaks the surface tension and lets the cream settle without agitating the carbonation. You get a beautiful creamy layer on top that mixes in as you drink.

5 More Flavour Combinations Worth Trying

Once you understand the formula — soda plus syrup plus cream plus optional citrus — the combinations are genuinely endless. Dr Pepper Raspberry: Dr Pepper, 1.5 tbsp raspberry syrup, 2 tbsp cream, no citrus. Rich and slightly fruity, tastes like a soda fountain dessert. Sprite Strawberry Basil: Sprite, 1.5 tbsp strawberry syrup, a squeeze of lemon, 2 tbsp coconut creamer, one or two fresh basil leaves torn and dropped in. Root Beer Vanilla: root beer, 1 tbsp vanilla syrup, 2 tbsp vanilla ice cream instead of cream — basically a root beer float with extra steps. Coke Salted Caramel: regular Coke, 1 tbsp caramel syrup, a tiny pinch of flaky sea salt, 2 tbsp half-and-half. The salt cuts through the sweetness in a way that makes the whole drink more complex. Sparkling Water Peach: sparkling water, 1.5 tbsp peach syrup, a squeeze of lemon, a splash of almond milk — a lighter zero-calorie-ish version.

What to Buy to Get Started

You need: one bottle of flavoured syrup, a bottle of your chosen soda, cream or creamer, and a large glass with ice. A 250ml Monin syrup bottle costs £5–£7 and makes about 15 drinks — substantially cheaper than buying dirty sodas at a café, where they typically run £4–£6 each. If you're making these regularly, a syrup pump (usually £2–£3 online) makes measuring easier and keeps the bottle cleaner.

Making It Non-Dairy

Coconut creamer and oat milk both work well as dairy alternatives. Oat milk produces a lighter, more subtle creaminess; coconut creamer is richer and blends more smoothly. Almond milk can work but tends to separate more quickly — drink fast if you use it, or stir more before sipping. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called a "dirty" soda?

The "dirty" refers to the addition of something creamy and opaque to an otherwise clear or standard drink — the same logic as "dirty" coffee. It's about the visual effect of the cloudy cream mixing into the fizzy base.

What's the best soda to use as a base?

Diet Coke and Dr Pepper are the classic bases. But honestly, any carbonated drink works — experiment with what you like. Sparkling elderflower, ginger beer, and even tonic water all make interesting dirty soda bases.

Can I make dirty sodas in advance?

No — they don't keep well. The carbonation flattens and the cream separates. Make each one fresh and drink immediately.

Are dirty sodas unhealthy?

They contain sugar and fat, so they're not health drinks. Using Diet Coke and a sugar-free syrup cuts calories significantly while keeping the flavour experience almost identical. As an occasional treat, the standard version is fine.

Where can I buy Monin syrups in the UK?

Most Waitrose and Lakeland stores stock Monin, as do many independent coffee shops. Amazon has the full range — peach, brown sugar cinnamon, and lavender are particularly popular for dirty sodas.
